Blackpool and the Fylde only Northern seaside towns showing high number of new business starts in 2014

Isn’t it nice to read some positive news about the town you live in.
My home town of Blackpool’s Council, has been running a business start up support scheme, named Get Started for the past 7 years or so. During this time nearly 1,000 businesses have been assisted to start. A quite unique phenomenon.
What makes Blackpool’s scheme stand out is that it offers a universal service to all residents, and does not differentiate by age, sex, environment or class. If you want to start a business in Blackpool, support is available FREE. Many agencies exist, but as they need to receive funding to operate, they can only operate where they are funded and must abide by whatever funding body rules require.
The objective in Blackpool is clear and simple. If it helps regenerate our town, let’s do it. It is as simple as that.
The government has some superb schemes available, 2 of which have been used with fantastic results.
The Start Up Loan Scheme designed to support people start a business, offers loans plus business support to new starts, and in Blackpool this scheme has generated nearly £750,000 in loans for new businesses in Blackpool. Money that quite simply would not have been available through any other channels. Businesses range from Photographers to tradesmen; Cleaners to E. Commerce; Bakers to Market stalls; Hairdressers to sports coaches: 18 year olds to 70 year olds. They can, and do, access loans unto £25,000
The New Enterprise Allowance helps unemployed people get off benefits and provides a fixed benefit allowance for 6 months plus access to a loan, if needed, up to £25,000.
These 2 schemes have helped make Blackpool a hotspot in the UK for new business starts as highlighted in the Guardian Newspaper.
“The only northern seaside towns with a fairly high number of startups were in the Blackpool and Fylde area!”
It takes a huge amount of time and energy to make a program work over a 7 year period, and build a reputation for excellence, respected across the board.
So lets hear it for Blackpool. A place that wants to develop its economy.
